Forecast Discussion

A clipper-like disturbance brought accumulating snow showers last night and early today to most of the High Country. Amounts included around 2" in Boone, 4"-5" on Beech Mountain and 5"-7" around Buladean and Wolf Laurel. Skies will clear tonight but it will remain cold and blustery.

The flow aloft quickly becomes zonal Friday; so, after a cold start, temperatures will moderate significantly for the afternoon. Skies will be mostly clear during Friday, but clouds will increase late at night.

A cold front will move through Saturday evening. Ahead of that front we can expect rain showers during the day Saturday. There a slight chance that this could begin as a wintry mix, but even if it happens, that mix will be too brief to be important. Liquid is the main form of precip during the day Saturday. Behind the front, temperatures will fall, and snow showers/flurries will develop Saturday night. Mountaintops could pick up another 1" Saturday night, but a dusting is about all the rest of us will see.

Sunday will be cold; Monday looks chilly and dry during the day.

A clipper-type system will move across the Appalachians Tuesday. This will produce snow showers Monday night through Tuesday with light to moderate accumulations of snow. Temperatures Tuesday will fall through the day to much colder levels by Tuesday night. Cold with flurries is expected to continue into Wednesday.

The rest of next week will continue the cold theme. We have another chance of snow Friday of next week.
